Porsche accident in Pune: From punishment by writing an essay to detention in an observation home – that’s what we know so far

In a shocking drunk driving case in Pune, a 17-year-old minor who was speeding in his Porsche killed two people on a motorcycle in Kalyani Nagar area. What caused an uproar was the leniency as the juvenile justice department had granted him bail just 15 hours after his arrest. Then on May 22, the agency revoked the minor’s bail and sent him to an observation home until June 5, the report reported ANI.

Here’s what we know about the case so far

1. On May 19, the Porsche driven by the youth killed two motorcyclists named Anish Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, both IT professionals residing in Madhya Pradesh.

2. CCTV footage showed that the teenager, the son of 50-year-old real estate developer Vishal Agarwal, was drunk.

3. On May 22, a high-level sessions court remanded the boy’s father and Black Club Pub employees Nitesh Shevani and Jayesh Gavkar to police custody till May 24.

4. On May 21, the Pune Customs Department also closed Cosie Bar and Black Bar in the city as officials reported that these establishments had allegedly served alcohol to the minor before the accident.

5. The JJB had earlier granted him bail subject to certain conditions: he must work at the Yerwada traffic police for 15 days, write an essay on accidents, seek treatment for his alcohol addiction and attend counseling sessions. However, after the police approached the panel seeking a review of its order, the JJB canceled the minor’s bail and sent him to an observation home.

6. On May 23, the defendant’s lawyer told the news agency ANI that the JJB will also decide whether the teenager should be tried as an adult or not. Addressing the media, Prashant Patil said, “The Juvenile Justice Act provides procedures to determine whether the accused Child in Conflict with Law (CCL) is to be considered a minor or an adult. This procedure takes nearly 90 days to complete.” The lawyer added that it takes 90 days to obtain reports from psychiatrists and counsellors and then the JJB takes its decision.

7. Demanding the removal of Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut alleged, “The Pune Police Commissioner should be sacked. Who did he help in this case? Two innocent persons lost their lives. The boy might have been seen drinking in the pub,” he said. However, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis denied any negligence on the part of the police, adding that no pressure was put on the police to investigate the case.

8. According to a India today According to reports, Surendra Kumar Agarwal, the accused’s grandfather, is currently on trial for allegedly paying gangster Chhota Rajan in connection with a shootout.

9. According to a Hindustan Times According to reports, Ashwini’s mother Mamata had claimed that her daughter had planned to visit her hometown Jabalpur to surprise her father on his birthday. She said, “Just a day before the accident, Ashwini informed me that she was returning to Jabalpur and had booked her ticket for June 18 to surprise her father on his birthday. But that’s how it ended,” quoted by HT. Mamata, who was heartbroken after her daughter’s last rites, narrated PTI“We were supposed to send her in a palanquin (to the groom’s house) after her marriage (in the future), but now we were forced to carry her body on a stretcher.”

10. Father Om Awadhiya mourned the loss of his son Anish and mentioned that his son not only supported himself but also took care of his younger brother who lived with him in Pune. “The culprit will be punished… That is fine… But how can we bring our child back now? He had spoken to his mother only two days before the incident and told us that he would come soon. He was a great support to the family. What will happen to my younger son now? he told the news agency PTI.
