Construction accident kills worker on Georgia campus

With the arrival of spring comes the annual flood of construction projects, and workers on the construction sites are warned of dangers. Just last month, one person died in a construction accident on the University of Pittsburgh campus. Now tragedy has struck another major campus.

The investigation into the death of a construction worker who died recently on the University of Georgia campus is ongoing, according to WGAU. University police say the worker, who was employed by IMI Construction, was struck by a piece of machinery while working on a steam line between the university’s Miller Learning Center and the Tate Student Center. The victim was identified as Trevor Wilkie, 36.

Just before 10 a.m. Friday, university police officials said the man was working on a steam line project on campus when he was accidentally struck by construction equipment. University police, Athens-Clarke County Fire and Rescue Services and National Emergency Services responded to treat the worker. He was taken to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

It is unclear why he was hit by one of the planes and whether charges could be brought against him.
