Great Lakes Pressed Steel Continues Warehouse Expansion

A west side manufacturer of metal stampings, tools, dies and formed metal parts plans to expand its Niagara Street facility with a new warehouse, distribution and light manufacturing.

Great Lakes Pressed Steel Corp. wishes to construct a 10,440 square foot metal panel building, using two properties located at 1382 and 1394 Niagara. This would be attached to its existing brick building next door, at 1398 Niagara, and its headquarters, at 1400 Niagara.

The vacant 0.6 acre lot is currently used as a parking lot.

The site is a brownfield and has already been remediated through the state’s Brownfields Cleanup Program.

The company on Monday sought approval from the Buffalo Planning Board for its site plan and coastal coherence determination, but the board filed requests for more details on the colors and appearance of the new building. If green-lighted, construction of the $200,000 project would take about eight months.

The Planning Board approved Uniland Development Co.’s request to divide three parcels totaling 159 acres of land near the intersection of Clinton Street and Bailey Avenue into three new pieces.

The land located at 2 Bailey Ave. currently owned by Norfolk Southern Corp., but Uniland plans to purchase two parcels of 7.8 acres and 52 acres for future industrial development, while the railroad company would retain the rest, including active rail lines in the north. portion. Uniland has proposed the site for a new centralized campus for the city’s public works department.

The board also gave final approval to the realignment of the Salvation Army’s downtown campus, at 954 Main St., by taking two tax lots and dividing them into three. This clears the way for the nonprofit to launch its project to replace its existing emergency shelter and three other buildings with a three-story shelter with 80 beds, a seven-story building with 147 apartments and five apartment buildings of townhouses with 17 units.

The project, which will begin by June, will take place in two stages.
