Coconut Creek Police Chief Albert Arenal announces his resignation

MIAMI – Another Broward police chief resigns.

Under a cloud of controversy, Coconut Creek Police Chief Albert “Butch” Arenal said Monday that he is retiring.

Arenal was appointed in 2015.

An independent investigation into Arenal police released last week found a “toxic work environment.”

Investigators found the force’s morale was poor and officers complained of inappropriate comments and favoritism.

The police union was considering whether to hold a vote of no confidence. Meanwhile, the city will name an interim chief this week.

In March, Margate’s embattled police chief came close Joe Galaska retired after a vote of no confidence.
