At least nine dead after strong winds caused the stage to collapse during an election rally in Mexico

The incident occurred on the outskirts of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon state, during presidential candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez’s campaign rally.

The initial reported death toll was five, but Nuevo León Governor Samuel Garcia later confirmed on X that eight adults and one minor had been killed.

In an earlier X-post, Garcia said 50 people suffered “moderate to severe” injuries and were being treated at nearby hospitals.

Máynez said he was taken to a local hospital after the stage collapse but was “doing well” and returned to the scene.

The promising candidate of the Progressive Party of the Civil Movement also announced that he had stopped all campaign activities and would remain in Nuevo Leon to “monitor the situation and the victims.”

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador issued a statement regretting the deaths and saying he was monitoring the situation.
