1-year-old boy dead after accident in Broken Arrow | News

BROKEN ARROW, Oklahoma — A 1-year-old boy was found dead in the driveway of his home following a tragic accident near Washington and Aspen (91st and 145th), according to police.

Police said around 4:24 p.m. they responded to a crash in a neighborhood near Washington and Aspen involving a pedestrian.

Captain Josh McCoy of the Broken Arrow Police Department said when officers arrived, they found a dead 1-year-old boy in the driveway.

“Our preliminary investigation indicates that in each case it appears that someone was in the driveway and was reversing out of the driveway,” McCoy said.

Police said the driver was not related to the boy but knew the family. They also said the driver has cooperated fully with investigators.

“Everyone is very distressed right now, so we’re trying to be sensitive and give them some time to communicate with us,” McCoy said.

According to the nonprofit organization Kids & Cars Safety, FOX23 studied how common accidents like this occur and found that 50 children are hit back every week in the United States.

The nonprofit said children under five are most at risk because they do not understand the dangers.

And when a tragedy like the one in this area happens, it is devastating for the family, the neighbors and the first responders.

Traffic investigators in Broken Arrow are trying to determine the exact cause of the accident. The coroner will determine the official cause of death.

Kids & Cars Safety urges all parents to install a rear view camera and sensor. Cars manufactured after 2018 should have rear view cameras.
