The death of an inmate at the Denison, Iowa, prison is under investigation

Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation detectives are investigating the death of an inmate at the Crawford County Jail in Denison.

Abraham Gatwech Ngor, 61, of Denison was found dead in his cell around 9 a.m. Monday, according to a statement from the Department of Criminal Investigation. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

Investigators said Ngor was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication around 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Prison staff discovered Ngor alone in his cell, unresponsive during a welfare check, and began CPR.

An ambulance transported Ngor to Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, where he was later pronounced dead. The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office requested state authorities investigate.
