Haiti – FLASH: Suspension of administrative permits due to violence against a student

Nesmy Manigat, the outgoing Minister of National Education (MENFP), wishes to reiterate his determination to combat violence in schools in all its forms. The Ministry recalls that the school is a space where students must learn to live with respect for one another and with dignity.

The Minister announces that he has decided to suspend the management license of Clément Geffrard Lanier, administrative director of the “Georges Sylvain Institution” in Fresino (city of Saint-Marc), following the serious violence committed against a student of this school. The management license of Félix Estimé, the school’s director, was also suspended.

The behavior of this principal does not respect any principle in school affairs nor what is said about the legal provisions prohibiting corporal punishment in schools.

As part of efforts to further ensure the daily well-being of the school, the Minister is also taking other measures to provide this child with the psychological framework necessary to avoid damage to his school work and is in contact with the judicial authorities in this case for the legal consequences.

In addition, training continues to be organized to help school leaders better understand their responsibilities regarding the school climate and the well-being of students, as provided for in international conventions and the Haitian Law on the Protection of Children’s Rights, which all school staff must respect at all times .

The minister asks parents to remain vigilant in order to curb violence in schools. They can call the ministry’s call center at 31 26 75 19/47 20 43 75 to submit their complaints and report any unfair practices.
