Oleksandr Usyk won a historic victory over Tyson Fury in Saudi Arabia to become the undisputed heavyweight world champion. However, his reign with all four belts will be short-lived and he faces a lengthy suspension.

Due to a contractually agreed rematch with Fury and the strict IBF rules regarding mandatory challengers, Usyk will be stripped of the IBF title.

The IBF title will then be contested between Filip Hrgovic and Daniel Dubois in June. The winner of that fight is expected to face Anthony Joshua in September, setting up a potential unification fight with the winner of the Usyk-Fury rematch.

Usyk’s focus remains on the rematch with Fury and he seems unfazed by the looming loss of the IBF title. After a long and grueling training camp, Usyk is ready to cement his position as the top heavyweight in the world with another win over Fury.

Why Oleksandr Usyk is being stripped of his world title

Usyk has four compelling commitments

The IBF has a reputation for being strict with its mandatory challengers, although such bouts have been postponed in recent years. Filip Hrgovic had to wait a long time to get a fight for the mandatory position and finally earned it with a win over Zhilei Zhang in 2022.

The last time the IBF heavyweight title was defended against a mandatory challenger was in 2020, when Anthony Joshua successfully defended his IBF, WBO and WBA belts against Kubrat Pulev.

Due to the postponement of the fight between Usyk and Fury after the latter sustained a cut on his eye during training, the IBF became impatient with their duty. Since Usyk has no chance of being able to defend the belt, it will become vacant within a few weeks of his victory.

Oleksandr Usyk faces a lengthy medical suspension after beating Tyson Fury

Although Oleksandr Usyk is now the undisputed champion, he has been suspended by the British Boxing Board of Control for medical reasons until June 2, according to BoxRec. This suspension will not significantly impact Usyk’s career as he is expected to take a break before a potential rematch with Tyson Fury in October.

After the fight, Fury claimed that Usyk had suffered a broken jaw, but this was later refuted by Usyk’s appearance at the press conference. Usyk’s promoter Alex Krassyuk explained that Usyk felt discomfort in his upper jaw and underwent a medical examination as a precaution. The issue was minor and only required a week-long restore.
