In the wake of last week’s devastating storms, thousands of Texans are struggling to rebuild their lives.

The storms, which caused severe flooding and destructive winds, left 145,000 customers without power and damaged homes, businesses, schools and vehicles in southeast Texas.

President Joe Biden signed a disaster declaration, allowing federal assistance to deliver aid to affected areas.

Residents affected by severe weather can seek assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The quickest and easiest way to apply is online at DisasterAssistance.gov. For those who prefer, the FEMA application is also available for submitting applications. Alternatively, people can call 800-621-3362 daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. CT.

When requesting assistance, residents will be required to provide essential information, including their social security number, damage details, insurance information, a phone number, mailing address, and banking information for filing direct.

For those needing in-person assistance, FEMA Disaster Survivor Assistance Teams will be stationed at the Spring Branch Family Development Center in Houston beginning May 21. These teams can help with applications, answer questions, and provide information about available resources. No appointment is necessary. The center, located at 8575 Pitner Road in Houston, will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

City and county officials also opened cooling centers, charging stations and provided food and water to support residents during this difficult time. Thousands of utility workers are actively working to restore power and clear debris.

Affected residents of Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, Polk, San Jacinto, Trinity and Walker counties are encouraged to seek help quickly to speed their recovery process.
