The GBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Cobb County, Georgia. The Cobb County Police Department requested the GBI conduct an independent investigation on May 17, 2024. A man, later identified as Clifford Jacoby Beck, 40, of Griffin, Georgia, was shot. No officers were injured in this incident.

According to preliminary information, a Cobb County Police officer saw a stolen box truck near Mableton Parkway and Veterans Memorial Highway just before 2:40 p.m. The officer requested additional units as they followed the stolen truck. Officers followed the truck into the parking lot of a gas station at the intersection of Old Floyd Road and Fontaine Road where they attempted to stop the truck. A passenger in the truck immediately exited the truck and complied with officers’ instructions. The driver of the truck (Beck) attempted to leave the parking lot and drove into the officers’ vehicles. Officers fired shots at the truck, striking Beck. The truck’s tires continued to spin and the truck and a patrol car caught fire. Officers removed Beck from the truck and EMTs and firefighters provided medical aid while firefighters extinguished the fire. Beck was transported to a local hospital where he died. The Cobb County Coroner’s Office will perform an autopsy.

The GBI will continue an independent investigation. Once the file is complete, it will be submitted to the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
