Woman rescued after hair became tangled in a rappel device in popular Utah canyon

GRAND COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) – A woman was rescued from the Bow and Arrow canyoning route Sunday evening after her hair reportedly became tangled in a rappel device, resulting in injuries.

The incident occurred on Sunday, May 20, just before 9 p.m. Grand County Emergency Medical Services said.

When rescue workers arrived on scene, the woman was freed from the device by her companions and lowered to stable ground, according to GCEMS. They also provided first aid and bandaged their injuries.

Paramedics then took over the treatment Grand County Search and Rescue to carry out a technical lowering.

GCEMS said once she was stabilized, GCSAR navigated her through a “multi-stage, complex cable system amid challenging windy and rainy conditions.”

“(Grand County EMS) thanks GSCAR for their complex lowering system implemented under such difficult conditions,” GCEMS said. “They also praise the prepared canyoning companions for their calm and effective response in caring for their injured friend and assisting in the rescue efforts.”
