Usyk suspended from boxing as Fury seeks rematch | The Guardian Nigeria News

The British Boxing Board of Control has suspended Oleksandr Usyk’s boxing license until July 2, 2024, despite Tyson Fury exercising his right to a rematch with the man who defeated him in Saudi Arabia at the weekend.

The reasons for this decision to suspend Usyk are not given, but it is likely a precautionary measure due to the injuries he sustained in the fight against Fury.

Promoter Oleksandr Krasiuk had previously stated that Usyk had suffered a minor injury after the fight with the Briton. He needs a week to recover.

Previously, Usyk defeated Fury to become the undisputed heavyweight world champion. Tyson landed more punches, but Oleksandr was more precise.

Meanwhile, promoter Frank Warren has confirmed that Fury would trigger the rematch clause to face Usyk again for the undisputed heavyweight championship in October 2024.

It was the incredible Ukrainian Usyk who prevailed in the first fight last weekend, May 18, in Saudi Arabia and was crowned the first undisputed heavyweight world champion of this century.

Fury appeared to have the upper hand in the first half of the fight until Usyk came on strong in the ninth, knocking him down with a huge left hand that resulted in a knockdown after the ropes kept the British boxer upright.

The rematch is expected to take place in Riyadh on the weekend of October 12-13.

However, former British boxer Johnny Nelson believes there will be no rematch as the Gypsy King is considering retirement.

“I know there is a rematch clause. I don’t really think that’s going to happen,” the 57-year-old told Seconds Out. “I know the psyche of a fighter and the things Fury said before and after (about Usyk), whether he just said it for headlines or whatever, it’s hard to swallow.

“Remember, (Usyk) is ‘a gap-tooth jumper in the middleweight division.’ All the insults, everything he has thrown at this man, he is a walking contradiction. So how will Tyson cope? Especially when looking at his performance. Will he get his head right? I don’t think he will do that.

“I think this will make Tyson seriously think about getting out of this game. He is a rich man and a fierce man who firmly believes that he is the best in the world. Now that this has happened, it will be hard for him to digest it, to accept it… I think he will have difficulty.”
