Is my child’s school open? Houston ISD among school districts reporting fewer storm-related closures Wednesday after rare derecho

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The Houston Independent School District plans to close just 23 campuses Wednesday, an improvement from nearly 40 schools closed Tuesday after the rare derecho that devastated the city.

HISD said progress has continued to allow all campuses to operate with working air conditioning again. The district added that it purchased 120 temporary coolers and rented an additional 290 to help cool schools.

All other campuses not listed below are open for classes on Wednesdays:

  • Benbrook Primary School
  • Black College
  • Browning Elementary School
  • Burrus Primary School
  • East Early College High School, campus closed to grades nine through 11 but open to grades 12 to take final exams
  • Field primary school
  • Forest Brook Middle School
  • Furr High School
  • Harper DAEP
  • Harris RP Elementary School
  • Harvard Elementary School
  • Janowski Elementary School
  • Marshall College
  • Moreno Elementary School
  • North Houston Early College High School
  • Northline Elementary School
  • Robinson Elementary School
  • Roosevelt Elementary School
  • Secondary DAEP
  • Sinclair Elementary School
  • Sugar Grove Middle School
  • White primary school
  • Whittier Elementary School

Additionally, HISD provided support to families in need of meals and other essential items at the following distribution sites:

Wednesday

  • Furr High School: 500 Mercury Drive, 9 a.m. to noon

THURSDAY

  • Henri College: 10702 chemin E. Hardy, from 9 a.m. to noon
  • Yates High School: 3650 Alabama Street, 9 a.m. to noon
  • Law and Justice High School: 3505 rue Coyle, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Other school districts have also announced closures.

Cy-Foire ISD

All CFISD schools will be open on Wednesday except:

  • Cypress Park High School
  • Holbrook Primary School
  • Labay Primary School
  • Lowery Primary School
  • Rowe College

The district asked families with children on open campuses to be patient if buses arrive late because one of its transportation hubs has not yet restored power.

Galena ISD Park

Four district campuses will be closed Wednesday due to a power outage:

  • Cimarron Elementary School
  • Cunningham Middle School
  • Green Valley Primary School
  • Tice Elementary School

The district said students and staff at open campuses should plan to report to their respective campuses at regular times. Buses will return to their normal routes and schedules.

ISD Spring Branch

Spring Branch ISD expects four campuses to remain closed Wednesday unless power and systems are restored by 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Campuses include Tiger Trail, Housman, Hunters Creek and Westwood. The district ordered Panda Path students and staff to report to Hollibrook Elementary School on Wednesday.

All other SBISD campuses are open.
