Pitbull attack: Mother and son attacked by a pack of dogs while walking near Jordan Lake in the Firefly Overlook housing development

PITTSBORO, N.C. (WTVD) — According to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, a pack of pit bulls attacked a mother and her son near Jordan Lake.

It happened around 6:30 p.m. on May 20 as mother and son entered the new housing development called Firefly Overlook.

When officers arrived, they found the two people with multiple bite wounds. The mother had bites on her legs and hand. While her 12-year-old son had multiple bites on his legs.

Both were taken to WakeMed for treatment.

Officers also found the four dogs that attacked the mother and son. They managed to catch three of them, but the fourth escaped.

A short time later that evening, an officer found the fourth dog. In the end he shot and killed that dog.

The dead dog’s body was sent to the state laboratory to be tested for rabies. The three captured dogs are held and observed for signs of rabies infection.

Officers said they later learned that the same pack of dogs had attacked a 66-year-old Cary man earlier in the day. This man was eventually able to escape the dogs. He drove himself to an emergency facility for treatment.

Investigators announced Tuesday that the dogs belonged to 31-year-old Brittney Fountain of Hope Mills. Fountain faces several criminal charges in connection with the incidents, including animal cruelty and abandonment.
