US soldier arrested in Russia for theft

A U.S. soldier who was imprisoned in Russia for criminal misconduct was arrested by a Vladivostok court on theft charges, Russian state news agency RIA reported on Tuesday.

Citing the court’s press office, RIA said that the soldier, whom the court identified as Gordon Black, will be held until July 2.

“The Pervomaisky District Court of Vladivostok arrested American soldier Gordon Black… on the basis of the ‘Theft’ article (of the Russian Criminal Code),” RIA quoted the court’s spokeswoman as saying.

The US Army, which said Monday it had been informed of the arrest, did not officially name the soldier.

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the soldier was stationed in South Korea. Another US official said the soldier had been accused of stealing from a woman.

Russian daily Izvestia, quoting an unnamed source, said the sergeant stationed in South Korea met a woman online from Vladivostok, Russia’s Far Eastern port.

Izvestia said the couple lived together for a while and he stole 200,000 rubles ($2,196) from her.

Reuters could not independently verify the Izvestia report.
