Major General Ivan Popov, the former commander of Russia’s 58th Army, was arrested on May 21 on suspicion of fraud, state media outlet TASS reported.

Several senior Russian officials have been arrested on corruption charges in recent weeks. In what is probably the most high-profile corruption case in Russia since the start of the all-out war in Ukraine Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov was arrested in April on bribery charges.

According to TASS, Popov was arrested as part of a broader investigation into large-scale fraud.

The military court and law enforcement confirmed his arrest but did not provide further details.

Popov was removed from his post in July 2023 after he reportedly bypassed the command of Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov and attempted to appeal directly to the Kremlin over complaints about the lack of rotation of its troops and other poor conditions on the battlefield .
