Channelview Church catches fire late into the night, cause under investigation

Authorities are reconstructing how a church in Channelview caught fire overnight Tuesday.

It happened just after 2:15 a.m. at the corner of Dell Dale and S Brentwood St. on the East Freeway. Officers from the Channelview Fire Department as well as Crosby, Highlands and several other agencies were called there to respond.

According to a Channelview FD district manager, initial responders found heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof. This caused additional damage to the building.

There was no electricity and the church was uninhabited at the time. However, it is unclear whether the power outage was due to last week’s storm or whether the church was closed.

The cause of the fire is therefore unknown and no injuries were reported.

We have been advised that due to the severity of the fire, a primary and secondary search was not conducted. It is therefore unclear whether anyone was squatting inside, but the investigation is still ongoing.
