The Longboat Police captain was named Officer of the Year

Longboat Key Police Capt. Robert Bourque, who continues to investigate the 2017 double murder at Zota Beach Resort, was honored May 16 as the Manatee County Hundred Club’s 2023 Officer of the Year.

“This award could not have gone to a more deserving individual who has performed at the highest level throughout his career,” said Longboat Key Police Chief George Turner.

Bourque was the lead investigator on the case. In August 2017, 59-year-old night desk manager Timothy Hurley and 51-year-old security guard Kevin Carter were shot during a robbery.

The original prime suspect, former Zota employee Darryl Hanna Jr., was charged with murder and theft of $900 from the front desk. After pleading not guilty and being held without bail in the Manatee County Jail, Hanna fell into a stroke coma and later died.

The investigation continued and in January 2024, Bourke arrested Hanna’s sister, Latoya Hanna, on a charge of second-degree murder. Latoya was allegedly her brother’s getaway driver.

Bourque began his career at Longboat Key in 2009 and has also worked at the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, the City of Tampa Police Department and the City of Bradenton Police Department.

The Manatee County Hundred Club annually recognizes the area’s top police officers. This is the first time a member of the Longboat Key Police Department has received this award.
