Tokyo and Seoul are strengthening their defense ties with an agreement to prevent a recurrence of radar incidents

Sources said Tokyo and Seoul are seeking agreement on measures to prevent a repeat of a 2018 incident in which a South Korean warship aimed its fire-control radar at a Maritime Self-Defense Force patrol aircraft, giving a boost to bilateral defense ties.

Defense ministers from the two neighbors hope to use the deal negotiations to boost their defense ties, which have been in limbo since the incident.

The meeting is expected to take place on the sidelines of the Asia Security Summit, better known as the Shangri-La Dialogue, which will be held in Singapore from May 31.
