Two separate pit bull attacks in Oakland County, one child and grandparent injured, one man dead

Farmington Hills, Wixom, MI – Two families were affected by pit bull attacks last week.

On May 15 at approximately 9 p.m., Wixom police responded to a report that a homeowner and his 1-year-old grandchild were attacked by the family’s two pit bulls. According to police, “Upon arrival, Wixom officers encountered the homeowner and his grandchild, both of whom had been injured by the pit bulls.” The one-year-old suffered bites to her face, forehead, lower back and leg, resulting in severe lacerations led. Wixom Fire Department personnel cared for the child, who was taken to Ascension Providence Hospital in Novi. The child was ultimately taken to CS Mott Children’s Hospital at the University of Michigan, where he is in critical condition awaiting surgery. The homeowner was treated at the scene for his injuries and declined transport to the hospital.”

A news release from Farmington Hills Police explains the fatal assault that occurred Saturday evening:

“On Saturday, May 18, 2024, at approximately 8:00 p.m., Farmington Hills Police responded to a residence in the 22000 block of Elmgrove St. for a report of an injured male who had been attacked by a family dog.

“A family member of the resident called 911 to report that he was going to his relative’s house after not hearing from him all day, and when the family member arrived, the family member found the man unconscious on the ground in the back yard of the resident Dog lying in house pulling on his body. The family member said he separated the dog and kept it indoors before calling 911. There were no other people in the house.

“When officers arrived on scene, they found a 40-year-old man unconscious with significant injuries consistent with animal bites. Farmington Hills Fire Department firefighters/paramedics arrived on scene, rendered aid, and transported the victim to Corewell Hospital Farmington Hills, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

“The Oakland County Coroner performed an autopsy, which ruled the manner of death as accidental and the cause of death as K-9 assault. The dog, which was surrendered to Oakland County Animal Control, is believed to be a pit bull mix.”
