At least five people were injured in a knife attack at a primary school in east China’s Jiangxi province on Monday afternoon, according to local authorities. This is the second such incident in the country this month.

The incident occurred in Guixi City.

The five injured people were hospitalized and are receiving medical treatment, state news agency Xinhua reported, citing the provincial public security agency. This is the second knife attack in China this month, which has now become commonplace. Those responsible blame these attacks on angry or mentally disturbed people.

Knife stabbings are becoming more and more common in China

Earlier this month, two people were killed and 21 others injured at a hospital in Yunnan province on May 7. China, where private gun ownership is illegal for most civilians, has seen a spate of mass knife attacks in public places in recent years.

In August last year, two people were killed and seven others injured after a man with a history of mental illness attacked people with a knife in a residential neighborhood in Yunnan. In July of that year, six people, including three children, were killed in a knife attack at a kindergarten in the southeastern province of Guangdong. Zhenxiong County is located in northeast Yunnan, bordering Guizhou and Sichuan provinces, and was considered poverty-stricken until 2020.
