NiMet workers suspend planned strike

The planned strike by unions at the Nigerian Meteorological Agency has been suspended.

This was announced on Sunday on her official X, formerly Twitter, account.

Aviation unions, including the National Union of Air Transport Employee Association of Nigeria, the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations and Technical and Recreational Employees, have directed employees of the Nigeria Meteorology Agency to announce their intention to strike on Monday , May 20, 2024.

The planned strike is due to management’s failure to resolve 45 months of minimum wage arrears and the resulting adjustments for employees.

Reacting to this, Nasiru Sani, Human Resources Director of NiMet said: “The issue of unpaid 42-month follow-on salary adjustment by the Federal Government predates the current management of NiMet.”

He further added, “However, as a responsible management that cares about the well-being of its employees, we cooperate with the unions and regularly inform them of our various obligations to government authorities to help clear the arrears.”

Effective from NiMet’s meeting with the unions, the agency said: “The Nigeria Meteorological Agency unions have suspended the planned strike action scheduled to commence on Monday, May 20, 2024.

“This followed an agreement reached today, Sunday, May 19, 2024, during a special session convened by the House Aviation and Technology Committee,” the agency said.
