Thunderstorm Warning in Illinois: Hail is expected in Kankakee and surrounding areas this evening

Chicago, IL – A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for central and northwestern Illinois, effective until 9:00 PM CST this evening. Areas along and south of the Kankakee River Valley, including Paxton, Pontiac and Kankakee, are bracing for severe weather with gusty winds up to 50 miles per hour and hail up to half an inch in diameter.

According to the National Weather Service, isolated thunderstorms are expected to produce heavy rainfall, frequent lightning strikes and strong winds, potentially leading to hazardous driving conditions. These storms are moving east-northeast at speeds between 5 and 10 miles per hour and are expected to continue into the evening hours. Residents in affected areas should remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.

The NWS advises residents to have multiple options for receiving weather alerts and to get indoors immediately if they hear thunder to reduce the risk of lightning-related injuries. Heavy rainfall may cause local flooding and make roads slippery and dangerous. Drivers are asked to drive carefully and be prepared for sudden weather changes.

Additional isolated thunderclouds are expected to move across the region Monday afternoon and early evening. Some of these storms can be strong to severe, with damaging winds and hail being the primary threats. Residents should stay tuned and watch for further updates and prepare for possible severe weather as the week begins
