Man struck and killed by NYPD car while walking on Van Wyck Expressway in Queens – NBC New York

According to police, an NYPD patrol car responding to a 911 call struck and killed a man traveling on the Van Wyck Expressway in Queens

The 23-year-old man was struck about 4:30 a.m. Sunday on the south side of the freeway at Liberty Avenue in South Richmond Hill, police said. The NYPD Highway Unit vehicle was en route to another incident when it struck the man who was attempting to cross the lane.

He was taken to nearby Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The man’s name has not yet been released.

The officer who was driving the company vehicle at the time remained at the scene of the accident but was later taken to hospital with minor injuries.

An investigation is ongoing. Investigators are looking for videos to determine what led to the fatal collision.
