Weather alert day: Severe storms are possible Tuesday afternoon into the evening hours

The ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Team has issued a Weather Alert for Tuesday afternoon into the evening as severe thunderstorms are possible. Much of Mid-Missouri is at a level 3 out of 5 severe risk, according to the Storm Prediction Center, meaning isolated severe thunderstorms are likely in the orange region.

Mid-Missouri will be in the warm sector of a storm system that will have low pressure to our north across northern Iowa/southern Minnesota. Temperatures will rise to near 90° by late afternoon, with dew points in the mid to upper 60s, providing plenty of fuel for storms to develop and move through the area in the late afternoon into the evening ahead of a cold front .

Isolated storms could develop as early as 3:00 p.m., and these isolated storms have the potential to produce any severe hazards, including large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes. However, the biggest overarching threat will be a line of damaging winds between 60 and 70 mph developing along the cold front after sunset.

This line is more likely after about 7 p.m. until about midnight as the front moves southeast overnight into Wednesday morning.

Make sure you have multiple options for receiving severe weather alerts. The ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather app is a great resource for alerts and you can set up alerts to let you know about nearby lightning.
