Police identify two NoVA men killed in plane crash

A Haymarket man and a Burke man died in a small plane crash in Fluvanna County Sunday morning, Virginia State Police said.

The men are pilot John W. Latham (63) from Haymarket. Latham owned the twin-engine 1975 Rockwell Aero Commander 690A that crashed in a heavily wooded area about 20 miles from Charlottesville.

The other person who died is Niiben CA Ayivorh, 73, of Burke. The bodies were taken to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.

The Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia Conservation Police and Virginia State Police found the still-burning wreckage on Miles Jackson Road, according to state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

The two traveled to South Carolina from Manassas Regional Airport on Sunday. It was raining lightly at the time of the plane crash.

Multiple fire departments responded after the emergency center fielded calls at 8:54 a.m. from residents who were afraid of a low-flying plane and heard what appeared to be an explosion.

The cause of the plane crash remains under investigation by state police, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
