The Cross River State High Court on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 in Calabar sentenced a 25-year-old man to life imprisonment for raping an 8-year-old girl.

In her judgment, Justice Blessing Egwu said the convict, Mr Aniedi Mfon, had no conscience.

Justice Egwu lamented the high prevalence of child molestation in the society.

She awarded the unnamed survivor a fine of N1 million.

Sources confirmed that Cross River State Commissioner of Police, CP Gyogon Grimah; the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Ededem Ani; Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI) Principal Counsel Barr. James Ibor; and the public prosecutor, Patience Emmanuel Akpama, facilitated the prosecution.

Respond, Barr. James Ibor said the survivor’s father was intimidated and offered bribes to withdraw the case but he resisted.

“I thank the Commissioner of Police and his team, the Attorney General Ededem Ani and his team, the staff of the Basic Rights Counsel Initiative, the survivor and her father who resisted intimidation and bribes and backed down.”
