South Brunswick police officers highlight ‘move over’ law after patrol car crashes

SOUTH BROWNSCHWICK — After two incidents in which township police SUVs were struck, motorists are being warned to pull over while police conduct vehicle stops.

“In the last three weeks, two patrol officers have had traffic stops while conducting car stops,” said Police Chief Raymond Hayducka. “We are fortunate that in both cases no officers were injured, but one police car was totaled.”

It’s dangerous to stop vehicles on the highways, sometimes just feet away from trucks and cars traveling 55 miles per hour, Hayducka said.

“We need driver assistance in pulling over or reducing speed when they see a police car with its lights on,” he added.
