Houston Dynamo and Amine Bassi clash with FC Dallas

Amine Bassi chose the perfect moment to score his first goal of the MLS season.

Bassi scored in the sixth minute of first-half stoppage time to help Dynamo earn a 1-1 draw against FC Dallas in the second leg of the Texas Derby Saturday night in front of 19,284 fans at Shell Energy Stadium .

FC Dallas (3-6-3), which was looking for its first victory in Houston since 2016, remains undefeated against the Dynamo (5-5-3) since September 2021. The Dynamo is eighth in the Western Conference standings with 18 points , six points ahead of FC Dallas.

Dynamo, who remain winless against their domestic rivals in the league this season, picking up one point from four games, made three lineup changes since their 1-0 loss to Austin FC last Wednesday with the return of Héctor Herrera in the field.

Shortly after colliding with Griffin Dorsey inside the box in a scary moment, Erik Sviatchenko nearly opened the scoring in the 43rd minute on a header from the center of the box that missed to the right.

After launching 10 shots in the first half, including five in five minutes, Dynamo put together a five-pass sequence to cover the entire field on Bassi’s goal in the 51st minute. Sviatchenko played a long ball to Ibrahim Aliyu in the left corner and Aliyu then found Bassi, who played it to Herrera with a back-heel pass.

Herrera immediately hit Daniel Steres on the left side, allowing Steres to thread the needle for his first assist of the season. Bassi, last year’s top scorer, gave Houston a 1-0 lead with a left-footed shot from the center of the box for his first goal since November. Dynamo held Dallas to two shots in the first half.

But Dallas hit Dynamo with a double whammy in the 69th minute. Petar Musa took advantage of an assist from Bernard Kamungo to equalize 1-1 with a left-footed shot from the center of the area into the bottom left corner. The game ended with Dynamo goalkeeper Steve Clark assisting off the field. Substitute Andrew Tarbell played the rest of the match.

Aliyu and Sviatchenko squandered their chances to find the back of the net in second-half stoppage time. The Dynamo outscored Dallas 18-7 with an 8-3 advantage on penalties while holding 61.3% possession. Clark made two saves and Maarten Paes made seven for Dallas.

The Dynamo travel to the LA Galaxy in MLS action at 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Dignity Health Sports Park.
