What can Márquez Valdes-Scantling do for the Buffalo Bills passing attack?

Earlier this week, the Buffalo Bills signed back-to-back Super Bowl champion and former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling to a one-year, $4.5 million contract that includes just over ‘one million dollars in signing bonus.

Valdes-Scantling spent two seasons in Kansas City with the Chiefs after having four previous seasons with the Green Bay Packers. Ultimately, this gives him veteran status and is something the Bills could use to help mentor some of the team’s younger players and specifically the receiving core.

The impact he could have on that is crucial as a lot of eyes will be on Buffalo draft pick Keon Coleman as he is expected to perform massively this season after Stefon Diggs left Orchard Park to play for the Houston Texans next season.

Last season, Valdes-Scantling had a poor year of production as he finished with 315 yards and a touchdown on just 21 catches. Those numbers are diminished by his 2022 stats with Kansas City, where he finished with 687 yards on a career-high 42 catches.

This shows that Valdes-Scantling is not a wide receiver, but it appears the Bills have no intention of him becoming one. However, he should provide good support for quarterback Josh Allen and Buffalo’s passing attack, as he is viable at receiving a handful of targets per game.

A change of scenery could also have been beneficial for Valdes-Scantling. The move to upstate New York may be what he needed to return to his great playing form that was on display two seasons ago, when he was important in getting the Chiefs to a Super Bowl. A Super Bowl is what Buffalo is always chasing as its window to win one narrows as each season passes.
