Atlanta receives promising update on Travis d’Arnaud’s health

The Braves had a bit of a scare last night when starting catcher Travis d’Arnaud had to leave the game in the fifth inning after experiencing dizziness. After last night’s game, Braves manager Brian Snitker said d’Arnaud would not start Saturday to give him time to recover. With d’Arnaud’s concussion history (four total in his career thus far), you can understand the caution Atlanta exercises when he doesn’t feel 100 percent behind the plate.

Today, it will be their third receiver Chadwick Tromp who will start today. The catching tandem of Arnaud and Tromp has caught every game since senior starter Sean Murphy suffered an oblique injury on Opening Day. Atlanta added to its catching depth by signing veteran Sandy León in early April.

d’Arnaud has had a strong 2024 season so far, with a .255/.336/.500 oblique line. His five home runs are also higher than those of the notable hitters at the top of the lineup. Tromp was adequate in his limited duties, cutting .211/.225/.316 and playing reliable defense in his 15 games.

It was announced earlier this week that senior wide receiver Sean Murphy is expected to begin his rehab assignment next week. Things could be going well to reunite one of the best catching tandems in baseball soon. If d’Arnaud is back early next week, he may just have to hold down the fort until the end of the month.

If Murphy can begin his rehab next week and return to Atlanta by the end of the month, it will provide a much-needed boost. While d’Arnaud is 35 years old, it’s a good idea to know that we’re approaching a time where the team can give Travis the rest he deserves. Keeping both receivers fresh down the stretch will be an important development during the 2024 season.
