A 21-year-old Northbrook man charged in a fatal crash in Glenview that left a student dead was sentenced to further incarceration Saturday as court documents revealed disturbing details about the moments before the crash.

Taeyoung Kim was arrested Friday evening and charged with the following crimes, police said:

  • Ruthless murder
  • Aggravated driving under the influence resulted in death, aggravated driving under the influence resulted in serious bodily injury and reckless driving
  • DUI, speeding and DUI with a blood alcohol concentration over 0.08
  • Drug-related driving under the influence, improper lane use, and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident

The 21-year-old appeared at a bail court hearing on Saturday, where he was ordered to remain in custody.

According to court documents, Kim’s vehicle was equipped with a dashcam that initially showed him driving his 2021 Ford Mustang next to one of his friends, who was a passenger in the vehicle.

According to court documents, Kim’s dashcam initially captured his vehicle as he drove near his home and later into downtown Chicago around 8 p.m. Sunday.

According to the court’s motion, Kim’s dashcam captured the vehicle running a red light on Roosevelt Road just before 11 p.m. before traveling at a high rate of speed down Ida B. Wells Drive, passing numerous vehicles and then making a U-turn.

From there, Kim’s vehicle entered I-90/94 westbound and continued at a high rate of speed, passing numerous vehicles, according to court documents.

Kim’s vehicle then entered I-94 at the intersection of I-90 and 94 and continued on the Edens Expressway until Kim’s vehicle exited Lake Avenue in Glenview at 11:06 p.m., court documents state.

At this point, Kim continued driving westbound on Lake Avenue and passed another driver traveling in the same direction. According to court documents, that driver observed Kim’s vehicle increasing its speed and turning off its headlights.

According to the offer, Kim continued driving toward the intersection of Lake Avenue and Meadow Lane, where the victims were in their vehicle at the intersection.

The vehicle was driven by 17-year-old Marko Niketic, who was accompanied by his 16-year-old girlfriend in the passenger seat, according to court documents.

According to the offering, at that point, Niketic activated his left turn signal and entered the intersection to turn onto Lake Avenue. These actions were recorded by a private surveillance camera.

As Niketic began to turn, Kim’s vehicle approached the intersection at tremendous speed, still with its headlights off. Just as Kim entered the intersection, the headlights came back on as Kim’s vehicle crashed into Niketic’s vehicle, court documents say.

Prosecutors said the dashcam captured Kim’s vehicle entering the intersection before it faded to black.

The front of Kim’s vehicle struck the driver’s side of Niketic’s car at 122 mph, causing Niketic’s vehicle to break in half, court documents said.

The front half of Niketic’s vehicle remained on the roadway while the back half broke through a fence and entered a nearby backyard, court documents showed.

According to the offer, numerous residents heard the impact of the accident and immediately called 911. Witnesses who arrived at the scene of the accident immediately afterwards observed Niketic in his vehicle, who had apparently died.

Niketic’s girlfriend suffered serious injuries in the accident, including a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a hematoma on the brain, a fracture of the pelvic vertebrae and strain on the left frontal lobe of the brain, causing loss of consciousness and seizures. She was released from the hospital Friday, according to court documents.

The offer said at least two witnesses saw Kim sitting in the driver’s seat of the Mustang as he told a witness his first name and admitted he had been drinking. At this point, Kim’s passenger was lying on the ground, bleeding profusely.

Following a response from police and paramedics, Niketic was pronounced dead at the scene, while both Kim and his passenger were taken to hospital along with Niketic’s girlfriend.

Kim’s passenger suffered a broken back and a severed artery in the crash and made statements on a body-worn camera identifying Kim as the driver of the Mustang, court documents said.

Kim suffered a fractured femur in the accident and later had her blood drawn during medical treatment, which confirmed a blood alcohol level of 0.088 over the legal limit. The blood also showed cannabis in his system, court documents showed.

When Kim’s Mustang was searched, the vehicle’s speedometer needle stuck at 120 mph, the vehicle’s top speed, according to court documents.

In his vehicle, officers discovered a bong, cigarette papers, a one-hitter cannabis pipe with residue and two plastic containers with cannabis residue, according to the offer.

According to the court’s motion, a search warrant was obtained for the vehicle’s black box, which showed Kim’s vehicle was traveling at 131 mph just 2.5 seconds before impact, with the recorded speed at the time of impact being 122 mph fraud . The posted speed limit on Lake Avenue at this location is 35 miles per hour.

Kim had a valid driver’s license at the time of the incident and has no prior convictions other than two minor Lake County traffic offenses from 2021 – one for speeding and the other for failure to obey a traffic control device. Kim received supervision for both crimes.

According to Glenbrook South High School, the accident occurred just days before Marko’s prom and three weeks before his graduation.

Throughout the week, groups of emotional family and friends visited the crash site and many placed candles, photos and bouquets of flowers at the scene.

“He’s one of those people, you meet him and he shines. Most sincere person ever,” said friend Preston Shute, holding back tears. “He had a lot of things going on. I can’t really process it.”
