Anthony Gordon penalty incident at Old Trafford – Premier League panel to make decision

Anthony Gordon scored at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.

However, it was an incident where he was denied a scoring opportunity that made headlines.

In the first-half incident, Anthony Gordon ran into the penalty area and just as he was about to shoot, Gordon was challenged from behind by Sofyan Amrabat.

The on-field referee (Robert Jones) did not award a penalty and the VAR (Jarred Gillett) did not ask him to watch a replay on the pitchside television monitor.

Anthony Gordon and his team-mates were amazed that nothing was given, as were the Newcastle United fans who were not at the game who saw the replays and clearly Amrabat brought down the NUFC player from behind and put his studs on Gordon’s Achilles tendon hit.

Clearly a Stonewall penalty and we all saw Anthony Gordon’s tattered sock as further proof.

Now an official Premier League panel has taken a look…

BBC Sport report – May 18, 2024:

“The referee was right not to award Newcastle a penalty in Wednesday’s defeat to Manchester United,” an independent panel says.

Sofyan Amrabat stepped on the heels of Magpies winger Anthony Gordon as he ran into the box late in the first half to give United a 1-0 lead.

The hosts went on to win 3-2 and the incident, which Gordon said was “a clear penalty”, has now been reviewed by the Premier League’s Key Match Incident Panel.

In the ruling, seen by BBC Sport, one panellist felt that “the defender’s left foot obstructs the attacker on the back of his heel” and that this was enough to warrant a penalty.

However, the other four panelists disagreed and the non-intervention of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) was unanimously supported.”

If you thought it was unbelievable that the punishment wasn’t given that night, then this is a whole other level.

You can’t imagine such a clear penalty when an attacking player is brought down from behind.

While the Premier League panel is anonymous, there are unconfirmed rumors that it operates under the codenames Ferguson, Cantona, Beckham and Keane…
