A Wilmington Township man is facing charges after he reportedly left the scene of a rear-end collision.

New Castle police reported that around 3:45 p.m. on May 2, 31-year-old Trent Sowers of Bethel-New Wilmington Road was driving a black Jeep and rear-ended a gray Elantra at West Washington Street and Columbus Inner Belt drove up.

According to a criminal complaint, Ashleigh Karnes, the driver of the Elantra, told police she was traveling east on West Washington Street and as she gave way to oncoming vehicles at the intersection, her car was struck from behind. She pulled into the parking lot of a nearby restaurant, but the Jeep drove away, she said.

The report noted that her vehicle had severe rear damage.

Police said a witness followed the Jeep and took a photo of it. Through their investigation, they learned that Sowers was the driver of the Jeep, the report said.
