A Panama-flagged oil tanker was attacked off Yemen, according to a British security company

A Panama-flagged crude oil tanker was attacked about 10 nautical miles southwest of the Yemeni town of Mokha, British security firm Ambrey said on Saturday.

According to Reuters, Ambrey reported that the radio communications they received indicated that the ship had been hit by a missile and that a fire had broken out on board.

The security firm said the tanker received assistance and a control unit was operational, but did not provide details about who provided the assistance.

Ambrey said in an advisory that nearby vessels should exercise caution and report any suspicious activity.

Earlier on Saturday, a ship was hit by an unknown object in the Red Sea, about 76 nautical miles northwest of Hodeidah in Yemen, and suffered minor damage, Britain’s Maritime Trade Operations Agency (UKMTO) reported.

Yemen’s Houthi militia has been carrying out multiple attacks on ships in its waters for months, while Israel wages an ongoing war against Gaza following the October 7 Hamas attack. Houthi attacks in the Red Sea have disrupted global shipping and forced companies to use longer and more expensive routes. They have also increased fears of a major war in the Middle East.

In response to the attacks on shipping, the US and Britain carried out strikes against Houthi targets.
