IRON MOUNTAIN – A woman died in a fire that ripped through a home in Iron Mountain late Friday.

The Iron Mountain Fire Department was called to 630 E.H St., a 10-unit building at the corner of Jackson and E Streets, at 10:53 p.m., said Ed Mattson, director of the Iron Mountain Police and Fire Department. Crews from Kingsford, Norway, Breitung Township, Sagola Township and Aurora, Wisconsin also responded.

It took more than an hour for firefighters to suppress the fire, which had broken through the roof, enough to allow them to safely enter the building. They found the body after a brief search and immediately notified distraught family members at the scene.

Mattson declined to provide further details about the victim. But comments from several people at the fire suggested it was a woman who lived there.

The American Red Cross assisted other residents displaced by the fire, which burned into the early morning hours. Mattson didn’t know how many residents lived in the building. One unit was empty.

It’s too early to speculate about the cause, Mattson said.
