Spotsylvania 2nd grade teacher and husband arrested after ‘suspected narcotics’ were found in their classroom

SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A second-grade teacher at Spotswood Elementary School in Spotsylvania County and her husband were both arrested and charged with multiple felonies after police said “suspicious narcotics” were found in their classroom.

According to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, 35-year-old Candyce Leigh Carter of Spotsylvania, a second grade teacher at Spotswood Elementary, was arrested after a school resource officer reported that she appeared to be under the influence of drugs and “suspicion “on narcotics”. were found in her classroom.


Carter was charged with criminal possession of Schedule I or II drugs, criminal endangerment of children and criminal neglect or abuse of a child. She is being held without bail at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.

During the investigation, Carter’s husband, 34-year-old Kristopher Donald Carter of Spotsylvania, was found in a vehicle in the school parking lot “under the influence of narcotics requiring medical attention.” A 2-year-old child was also found in the vehicle.

Carter was arrested and charged with child endangerment and child neglect or abuse. He was taken to the Rappahannock Regional Jail on $5,000 bail.

No students reported injuries or exposure, but out of an abundance of caution, Carter’s classroom was professionally cleaned. The authorities did not provide any information about which drugs were specifically found in the classroom.
