The United States is awaiting the results of India’s investigation into allegations related to an assassination attempt on Sikh separatist leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in the United States, a State Department official said.

“They (the Indian government) have set up a committee of inquiry to look into the matter and that work is underway; We will wait for the results. But we have made it very clear that we take it seriously and that they should take it seriously too,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters at his daily news conference on Monday.

Miller was responding to a question about allegations that Indian government officials were involved in a plot to assassinate Pannun, a U.S. citizen and Sikh separatist leader.

“I would refer you to the Canadian authorities to discuss the details of the investigation. As for the indictment returned in the United States, I will let the Justice Department speak in detail,” he told reporters.

“And the one thing I would like to say is that when it comes to the State Department, we made it clear from the first time these allegations were made public that we think India should take this very seriously and investigate it,” Miller added.

The Washington Post, citing unnamed sources, recently named a Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) official in connection with the alleged plot to kill Pannun on American soil last year.

India criticized the US daily’s report and strongly rejected the claims. It said the report contained “unwarranted and unsubstantiated” allegations relating to a serious matter and an investigation into the case was underway.

“The report in question contains unwarranted and baseless insinuations regarding a serious matter,” External Affairs Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said in New Delhi last Tuesday.

Jaiswal said a high-level investigative committee set up by New Delhi to examine U.S. input into the alleged conspiracy was still in the process of investigating the case.
