Further storms are expected today into early Saturday

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Today’s forecast: The forecast is a little calmer for today compared to yesterday, but there is still a good chance of rain. Scattered showers and a few T-storms early on should lead to a slight lull from late morning into early afternoon. The big question with today’s forecast is whether another round of storms will develop by late afternoon. Regardless of whether it actually comes to fruition or not, the day is not expected to be a trough as highs will be in the mid-80s.

Dr. Steve Caparotta will provide the weather update at 4 a.m. Friday, May 17.

Going forward, guidance assumes areas near and south of highways have the greatest potential for additional heavy rainfall. An additional 1 to 4 inches of precipitation is possible in these areas, although locally higher amounts are not ruled out. Some areas north of the highways could see less than an inch of additional precipitation in the future.

Danger of severe weather

A level 2/5 (minor) severe weather risk remains across the area today and tonight.

Again, there is some uncertainty as to whether we will see another active storm series by late afternoon, but confidence is slightly higher as the storms return late tonight into the early hours of Saturday. Damaging winds and hail remain the biggest concerns with strong storms, but isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out.

Extended outlook

For most of us, rain is expected to stop on Saturday morning, meaning the weather will be much calmer for much of the weekend and into next week. The trade-off will be a return of very hot weather, with highs in the low to mid 90s Sunday through all of next week. Light rain is possible again until the end of next week.
