Mom was killed by a fallen tree near Buffalo Bayou during Thursday’s storm in southeast Houston

HOUSTON — A woman died Thursday evening in southeast Houston after investigators said she tried to move her vehicle to prevent it from being damaged ahead of the storm.

According to Houston police, the tragic incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Ave. E and W Hedrick near Buffalo Bayou. First responders from the Houston Fire Department also arrived to assist and found a woman in her SUV next to a home.

Lt. Willkens of the Houston Police Department said the unidentified woman, 31, was a mother of four who went outside to move her car out of fear that a tree would fall. But before she could move the car, Lt. Willkens said the tree fell on her vehicle and killed her.

No further details have been released at this time, but Houston Mayor John Whitmire said at least four people had died during the storm as of Thursday evening. However, it is unclear whether this mother was one of the residents killed.
