IDF confirms the death of a soldier in an operational accident on the Gaza border

The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit reported Thursday that Sergeant Major Ran Yavetz, 39, of Modiin, a soldier with the 6828th Patrol Battalion of the Bislah Brigade (828), was killed in an operational accident in a military area near the Black Arrow Memorial outside Kibbutz Mefalsimin which a mortar tube exploded while firing at Jabaliya.

Ila Dekel, a friend of Ran and his wife Tamar, wrote: “I sat next to his wife Tamar at the Memorial Day ceremony just last week. Itay, his son, led the ceremony, Tavor stood next to him and together they lit a candle in memory of the fallen And only today Ran has become one of the fallen we must remember.

Tamar sat next to me at the ceremony, the belly of a nine-month pregnant woman in front of her. She told me that she didn’t agree with Ran going to Gaza this time so that she could call him once she started labor, and she comforted me that Yonatan was in there and had no phone reception.

She added: “How? How can she call him to birth now from where he has gone? pull yourself together and keep fighting. And now we’re at home and suddenly we have to tell the children that their friend’s father was killed.

“Ran, married to Tamar and father of Itay, Noga and Or, was killed in action today near the Gaza border,” Modiin Mayor Haim Bibas wrote on his Facebook account. On behalf of myself and the residents of the city, I would like to express my condolences. May his memory be a blessing to the Yavetz family.
