Irvine police arrest suspect in fatal shooting of UPS driver

After a standoff, officers arrested a man suspected of shooting a UPS driver in a delivery truck at an industrial complex in Irvine on Thursday.

Irvine police said it happened at Crysler and Bendix in Irvine around 3 p.m. Officials told KCAL News that a UPS driver was shot in his truck, possibly during a break from work.

Police confirmed they are investigating the incident as a murder. Officers added that the incident was not a robbery and that the victim may have been targeted.

“From witness statements, it sounds like this is his normal path,” said Sgt. Karie Davies of the Irvine Police Department. “The area where he was shot is usually where he takes his breaks. We don’t know if the suspect was waiting for him to come back after giving birth.”

A suspect was discovered by officers in a pickup truck around 6 p.m. An altercation broke out between Irvine officers and Orange County Sheriff’s Department deputies near Lake Irvine on Santiago Canyon Road. He was arrested by a SWAT team.

The victim’s identity has not been released.

No suspect information has been released. Police tweeted that anyone who saw anything suspicious should contact police at (949) 724-7200.
