UPS driver shot behind the wheel of a parked delivery truck in Orange County

A gunman who reportedly drove next to a parked UPS truck in Orange County and fired multiple shots at the driver on Thursday was taken into custody, authorities said.

Irvine Police Department officers responded to calls about the fatal shooting at Chrysler and Bendix streets in what appeared to be Goodyear Business Park around 3 p.m

Authorities say the preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, described as a white male wearing a dark shirt and hat and a face mask, drove up to the parked UPS truck and shot the driver who was sitting behind him behind the wheel and fled the area without ever getting out of the vehicle.

When first responders arrived, the driver was still behind the wheel and suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pulled from the vehicle while police attempted life-saving measures. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries on the sidewalk.

Video of the scene showed a heavy presence of police and fire personnel. The area was cordoned off and a canopy was placed over the victim’s body while investigators began searching the area containing the evidence. Several evidence marks were seen on the ground, likely shell casings from the fired ammunition.

A man who works in one of the nearby buildings, identified only as F. Ferguson, told OnScene TV, a video news outlet, that they heard several gunshots coming from their office but thought the noise was coming from a nearby construction site .

“From what I’ve been told, sometimes (the UPS driver) parks here and just takes a break,” Ferguson added.

Authorities responded to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department just after 5:30 p.m reported Road closures on Santiago Canyon Boulevard between Jamboree and Irvine Lake due to police operations.

Aerial footage of the scene captured by Sky5 showed two SWAT vehicles in a standoff with a man in a silver truck.

The officers were seen breaking one of the rear windows and deploying a gas inside the vehicle before firing a K-9. The suspect was then pulled from the vehicle and taken into custody.

A motive for the fatal shooting is under investigation, but authorities said it does not appear to have been a robbery motive because nothing was stolen from the driver.
