Extreme weather in Houston: Devastating storms leave trail of destruction in several parts of the city and surrounding areas

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A severe storm with damaging winds, triggering tornado warnings, moved through Houston and surrounding areas Thursday evening, leaving a trail of damage in its wake.

In western Harris County, ABC13 cameras captured a few downed transmission lines at West and Fry Road.

“They’re the strongest, the ones that carry the highest current, and it takes a lot of wind to topple something like that because they’re built to withstand high winds,” said chief forecaster David Tillman during Thursday’s update on the downed wreck. lines.

Also in Katy, along Fry Road and FM-529, eyewitness photos showed damage to the back of a house and a tree that snapped, part of which was on top of a vehicle.

In that same area, other images showed damage to the Starbucks store across from Cy-Springs High School. Down the road at the Cypress Springs Shopping Plaza, the plaza sign was badly damaged, with parts nearly torn off.

In the northeast part of town, a viewer sent in images of the damage to Krab Junkie on Kelly Road. The images showed fallen branches and what appears to be a trampoline and fan on a post and fence.

Footage from another ABC13 camera shows massive damage at the Conejo Malo club on Travis Street near Commerce. The images show an entire brick wall of the building torn out, with more than dozens of bricks covering the parking lot. It is unclear if anyone was inside the building at the time.

In the northwest area, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez shared an image on social media of an uprooted tree that had fallen at the intersection of Pinemont Drive and TC Jester.

“Please avoid the roads if possible,” Gonzalez urged.

Also downtown, a guest at the Hyatt Regency shared a video of water pouring inside after winds apparently blew out the windows.

At this time, it is not known if anyone was injured.
