Police say an attacker is at large after a woman was attacked on a hiking trail near Niles

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — After a woman was attacked and seriously injured by a man on a Cook County Forest Preserves trail near Niles last week, police are asking the public for help in finding the suspect.

Investigators said it happened on the afternoon of May 12. The woman was walking along the North Branch Trail in Bunker Hill Forest Preserve between Touhy Avenue and Howard Street.

Martin Hasler is the first deputy chief of the Cook County Forest Preserve Police.

“A man on a bicycle approached her from behind and hit her in the head multiple times with a blunt object, causing serious injuries,” Hasler said. “The victim was then taken to hospital for treatment.”

After last week’s attack, police increased patrols along and near the North Branch Trail.

The authorities have released a sketch of the wanted man.

Anyone with information about the attack or the person in the sketch is asked to call Forest Preserves Police at 708-771-1001.
