Due to strong storms, the weather agency’s alert has been issued for Wednesday night and Thursday morning

ROANOKE, Va. – Due to the possibility of strong to severe thunderstorms, a weather agency alert has been issued for Wednesday night (May 8th) through midday Thursday (May 9th).

While a few isolated storms are forecast on Tuesday, storm coverage is limited and does not warrant an alert day.

Most of Wednesday afternoon will be hot and storm-free, although a few non-severe storms are possible in the morning.

The worst weather is expected to be Wednesday night, which is all the more reason to have options for weather alerts. Make sure notifications are turned on too!

What to do if there is a severe weather warning, especially at night?

A line of strong to severe storms will approach areas near and west of Interstate 77 after 8 or 9 p.m.

A line of strong to severe storms will move in from the west on Wednesday after 8 or 9 p.m.

The biggest concern with this line will be the risk of fallen trees and/or power outages. Hail and short-term flooding can also accompany the route. The risk of a tornado is low, but not zero.

This line will rush from west to east all night into Thursday morning.

The line continues to move eastward overnight into Thursday morning.

There may still be rain in some areas (not shown on FutureTracker) by commute time on Wednesday, but we do not expect heavy rain at that time.

Rain showers will continue into peak hours on Thursday.

This series of storms could consume a lot of energy and deprive us of the chance of further storms on Thursday afternoon. However, the front will move into a warm and moist air mass, so we cannot rule out some stronger storms east of the Roanoke Valley on Thursday afternoon.

If additional severe storms occur Thursday afternoon, they would form primarily in areas east of the Roanoke Valley.

This will be more or less a wait-and-see situation once the line comes through.
