Houston Landing to Expand Education Team

Houston Landing Editor-in-Chief Manny Garcìa announced Wednesday that the nonprofit newsroom will add four positions to its three-person staff to cover education in the greater Houston area.

“At Houston Landing, we view education as the cornerstone of success – for families and for the city,” Garcìa said.

The team will be led by editor-in-chief Jacob Carpenter and will include K-12 reporters Asher Lehrer-Small and Miranda Dunlap. Three reporting positions will expand the scope of the work and focus particularly on Spanish reporting, writing and translation work, as well as local coverage of students, solutions to community needs and policy explanations.

In collaboration with OpenCampus and with support from the MD Anderson Foundation, Houston Landing is hiring a higher education reporter, primarily to focus on the region’s large community college system, a major economic engine and destination for students from Houston. Two other reporters will focus on coverage based in part on public comments.

An audience engagement producer will be brought into the team to ensure coverage is connected to key communities, and Adriana Rezal, the newsroom’s data visualization specialist, will play a central role in efforts to ensure that this coverage meets the needs of all audiences.

“Education is a passion for the city, as well as Houston’s civic leaders, nonprofits and employers, and this presents an opportunity for new partnerships in audience development and fundraising” , said CEO Peter Bhatia.

“Since the launch of Houston Landing, our educational coverage has brought together hallmarks that are core to our organization’s mission: quality journalism that puts our readers first, accompanied by an innovative approach to reaching audiences through live events,” Garcìa said. “Today, we are building an education giant just when our community needs subject matter expertise and comprehensive coverage more than ever. »

Houston Landing is an independent news organization dedicated to public service journalism that seeks to strengthen democracy and improve the lives of Houstonians, one story at a time.
