West Virginia man killed in car crash in Bedford County

BEDFORD COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — A man was killed after a car crash in Bedford County Wednesday morning.

Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) said they were called to Hyndman Road at the intersection of Allegheny Road in Manns Choice Borough around 10:30 a.m. on May 15 for a motor vehicle accident. The accident occurred between a 2016 Ford Focus and a 2019 Peterbilt 389.

The Ford was driven by Walter Kwapien, 70, of Morgantown, West Virginia. According to PSP, Kwapien stopped at the stop sign on Allegheny Road before attempting to cross Hyndman Road. He then turned into the Peterbilt’s lane and that truck was unable to brake or stop in time.

The Ford was hit several times and rolled over before finally coming to rest on its roof, police determined. Police added that Kwapien had to be extricated from the vehicle.

He was taken to UPMC Bedford but was pronounced dead a short time later. The driver of the Peterbilt was uninjured.
