Student injured in school bus crash in Waterbury

Shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday, a school bus transporting students to Crossett Brook Middle School and Harwood Union Middle/High School struck a student in Waterbury, sending him to the hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries, according to state police announced.

According to Harwood Superintendent Mike Leichliter, the incident occurred shortly after 8 a.m. near the intersection of Blush Hill Road and Kimberly Lane.

So far, Vermont State Police have determined that bus driver Bob Littletree, 77, of West Hartford, was traveling south on Blush Hill Road at about 5 miles per hour when a 12-year-old ran in front of the bus before the bus fully arrived Stop. According to police, the road was wet at the time and there was morning fog.

According to police, Waterbury Ambulance Service took the student to Central Vermont Medical Center to be evaluated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. In his message to families, Leichliter said the student was conscious when the ambulance arrived.

There were about 15 students on the bus at the time, and a second bus was sent to take them to school, the principal said. Duane Pierson, co-principal of Crossett Brook Middle School, also made his way to the hospital. The student attends Crossett Brook in Duxbury, Leichliter confirmed.

That area of ​​Blush Hill Road was completely closed to traffic for about two and a half hours while investigators were on scene, police said.

“Our thoughts are with this student and his family,” the principal said.

Speed ​​or impairment is not believed to be a factor in this crash and the case remains under investigation, State Police Trooper Mae Murdock said in a news release.
